Nuts Without Contamination from Other Nuts or Peanuts

May 21, 2018 by Suzie Fromer

We have put together the following list for food challenges or folks who have allergies to one but not all tree nuts (or peanuts but not tree nuts, or vice versa!)  We have HEARD the below products are, as listed, safe from contamination from other listed allergens; however, it is your responsibility to confirm that things are ACTUALLY or are STILL free from cross-contamination before you purchase, as manufacturing practices can change at any time!

Also, it can be confusing (free of this, but not of that…) so please READ CAREFULLY.

Tree Nuts that are FREE of Other Nut AND Peanut Cross-Contamination

Almonds

Barney Butter (recently verified)
Peanut-free almonds, almond butter, and almond flour; they don’t seem to make anything other than almonds, but call to confirm also other nut-free as well.

Big Tree Organics (recently verified minus macadamia nut issue)
Almonds processed in an “almond only” facility BUT may be cross contaminated with macadamia nuts; unclear

Wonderful Brands
When last someone called they make their almonds and pistachios in two totally separate facilities (and no other nuts sold).

Cashews*

*note about cashews: you will never find cashews still in the shell, as the shells are poisonous.  So they’ll always be pre-shelled–but typically at a facility that also has dealt with other tree nuts…

Sunshine Nuts (recently verified)

Macadamia Nuts

Hamakua Macadamia Nut Co. (recently verified)

Pecans

Pearson Farm (recently verified)
Grows and handles pecans exclusively

Pine Nuts

New Mexico Pinon Nut Company (recently verified)
You’ll have to shell these yourself

Tierra Farms
Peanut-free and organic tree nuts with limited cross-contamination possibilities: the pine nuts are processed in a factory that also processes sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.  All of the raw materials come to us in vacuum sealed containers.  They also sell cashews though those are in an alternate, dedicated facility.

“Tierra Farm is a peanut-free facility. We do not store, carry, or process any peanuts of any kind. We do carry the following tree nuts: Cashews, Macadamia Nuts, Pistachios (in shell and meats), Almonds, Pecans, Brazil Nuts, Hazelnuts, Walnuts Pine Nuts.

All of our tree nuts are stored, processed, and handled on the same equipment. For example, the cashews are packed in the same room, on the same tables as all of the above products as well as our granolas, chocolate products, seeds, and dried fruits. We do try to prevent further cross contamination between products by changing gloves each time a different product needs to be packed but this does not guarantee that there is no cross contamination. The roasted cashews are roasted in the same ovens as the above roasted tree nuts and granola as we do not have separate ovens for each product. The cashew butter is processed on the same equipment and is handled and stored in the same facility as the hazelnuts, almonds, and pecans. The equipment is cleaned between each use but that does not guarantee that there is no cross contamination. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that the cashews that we carry are free from cross-contamination by our other products.

All of our suppliers of tree nuts, listed above, do come from peanut free facilities. All of our other products that we do carry, either come from peanut free facilities or the suppliers have dedicated areas/facilities for peanuts and peanut containing products. Please also take into consideration that all of the products that we carry may be shipped on trucks, cargo containers, etc, with peanuts or peanut containing products.”
